Resonance from Cuba

If you’ve had a Reiki session with me or joined one of my sound baths, you’ve likely heard me sing for the Orishas, who are divine energy beings in African traditional religion—very similar to archangels. These songs were channeled through Spirit centuries ago in West Africa by the Dahomey and Yoruba people, endured unimaginable hardships through the Middle Passage, and finally landed in the Americas.

The energy of this music carries a deep ancestral connection to the earth and to celestial consciousness. They are songs of healing and remembering.

Over 20 years ago, I obtained an artist visa to study Afro-Cuban music and dance in Havana. As a descendent of enslaved African people through my paternal lineage, I’d felt an intense somatic and energetic beckoning back to these traditions. I was able to commune with the people of La Habana Vieja, learn from renowned artist-healers, and was even invited to sing in ceremony.

Although I didn’t realize it at the time, my connection with the art of the Orishas marked the beginning of a long healing journey to reclaim my energy, to find ease with the unseen, and to trust myself and my guidance. Now I often call on Orisha energy in Akashic Records readings, sound ceremonies, and Reiki healing.

But what do the Orishas have to do with Reiki?

Everything. Because we are all connected. All one. All of these names are labels for energies that bring us back to the truth of universal love. Love for ourselves, our planet, and for every energetic being throughout space and time.

And when we sing with loving intention and divine connection, watch what happens.
